Faustino I Gran Reserva 1996

What's great is you can get this in any good supermarket!
Grape varieties: 90% tempranillo, 10% mazuello and graciano.
It has an intense, bright ruby colour.
On the nose delicate, aromatic, deep, and complex.
Smooth, velvety, mellow taste, very long finish.

Not the best rioja wine I've had, but reminds me why my favorite variety is still tempranillo: you can find the whole european history in this bottle.

For $ 39.

Still fermenting and yet to be bottled.
2000 was considered to be a very good vintage, reflected in the incredible 914 g/l of sugar in this wine.
With this level of sugar, it could ferment for long-long years and still only hit a couple of degrees alcohol.
Not surprisingly, the bouquet is youthful, with touches of fresh apricot.
On the palate, surprise surprise, it's sweet, though amazingly, it doesn't taste as sweet as one would expect.
The structure of the wine is quite amazing - it has the viscosity of honey and tastes like honey lifted by apricot flower.
An interesting experience, a brilliant dessert wine.
Perfect match with blue cheese or goose live.
After ten years still can be cellared for up to 10-15 years...
For NZ$ 120.

Classic Pinot Noir aromas of dark berries and plums prominent, in this wine created from the best of Waimea's 2007 barrels.
A floral note of carnations adds interest and prettiness to the wine.
It has a fruit driven palate steadied by a supple structure of fruit and oak tannins.
After careful cellaring expect the fruit-driven aromas to give way to earthier, savoury notes.
A bit strange for me: a pretty good Pinot Noir from the Nelson area! (which is not famous for its reds...)
Try with rack of lamb or even better match with garlic butter grilled Portobello mushrooms.
For NZ$ 28.

Falling Water

1 shot 42 Below Feijoa vodka
limonade
1 thin slice cucumber

Cut a long, thin slice of cucumber, about as long as a highball glass and rest it against the inside of the glass.
Fill it with ice cubes, pour in 42 Below Feijoa vodka and top up with limonade.

A great summer night refresher.

Amaretto Sour

2 shots amaretto almond liqueur
1-2 splash sweet and sour mix

Pour the amaretto liqueur into cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes.
Add a splash or two of sweet and sour mix, and shake well.
Strain or pour into old-fashioned glass.
Garnish with a maraschino cherry and slice of orange or lemon.

Jager Bomb

The Jager Bomb is originally a mixture of Red Bull and Jagermeister, both being popular products, although it's increasingly common for other energy drinks to be substituted for the Red Bull.

The caffeine-alcohol combination creates a unique 'high' or at least, a counteract to the depressant of alcohol - making you more aware, more energetic, and more active.

1 can (app. 350 ml) Red Bull or Bomb (or similar) energy drink
1-2 shot(s) Jagermeister or Unicum (or similar) herbal liqueur

Pour energy drink into a medium sized glass.
Add a shot glass of the herbal liqueur, and chug.

Pillar Box Red 2007

Blend of 65% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.

Displaying a dark colour and vibrant purple hue, the 2007 Pillar Box Red has bright aromas of blue and dark berry fruit entwined with liquorice, spermint and cigar box complexity.
The palate is rich and fleshy, with flavours of fresh blackcurrant and blueberry fruit combined with orange rind, dark chocolate and spicy smoky oak characters.
Whilst the tannins are full, the palate is round, soft and well balanced, leading into a lingering harmonious finish.
Serve with a soft, runny camembert cheese.
